It’s a state old cooperative that recently received invested from Sweden and in cooperation with Testament winery near Sibenik has breath new life. ![]() Top producer top visit.ĭrive down to Smokvica and go to Merga Victa winery, now run by a young and talented Igor Radovanovic. His Posip macarated Orange wine is also excellent as are his desert ones. He has about 8 different wines all which are excellent, highlights being his Posip Intrada which is the best Posip I think this year. ![]() Krajancic a poet and a winemaker is the father of the new age Posip’s, I have been trying to get a visit there for a couple of years but only arranged one this time around. Take a drive to Smokvica and Cara, the homeland of Posip about 25 minutes from Korcula and you are surrounded by amazing producers. Zure is another interesting winemaker, his Grk Bartul, Grk Revelation (Sur Lie) and Posip Sur Lie are all excellent. Dalmatian Heaven on Korcula: Bire Celebrates 20 Years of Grk at Lesic DimitriĪ lesson in Dalmatian perfection at the second Korcula Spring Food and Wine Fair, as the Bire winery celebrates 20 years of its Lumbarda winery with a six-course Lesic Dimitri special last Saturday. But if you want something special ask for Grk Defora - they don’t usually sell it because its limited production but if you ask its just magic. His plavac, though different from the big brothers in Peljesac is a nice take on the Croatia’s favourite red grape. 2019 vintage is consistently outstanding for a small garage winery excellent. It’s a grape that cannot produce by itself so it needs to be pollenated by another grape which is usally plavac mali (grape related to Primitivo and Zinfandel).īire is the oldest producer of the Grk wine, almost a legend in its own. Grk is a unique wine as it only grows in Lumbarda on the Southwest corner of the island. Korcula - I visited Bire and Zure in Lumbarda which are probably the best producers of Grk.I visited over 10 wineries and bought home about 40 bottles of wine (post lockdown therapy) which I cannot store but that’ s another matter. Peljesac - the home of Plavac Mali including Dingac, the very first appellation in former Yugoslavia.Korcula Island - which is best known for its Posip and rare Grk.I am not going to lie, after 15 weeks of working at home in our small Camberwell flat it was absolute bliss.Īs every year, I spent some time touring the wineries of the two very important regions for Croatia: I managed to escape the lockdown in early July and join my family down in Korcula on the Adriatic Coast for 4 weeks. Hoping to find any of the above in the airport as we’re on hand luggage only this trip Enjoying a glass now from the bottle we brought back to the villa but would definitely benefit from more bottle age. Both Majstor ranges are the pick of the vines. ![]() Plavac Mali Majstor 2015 is a fair bit fuller. A nice finish with some spice rounds off a good glass Plavac Mali 2013 spent 12 month in second use oak and has a tannic dryness but is a nice red with plenty of plums. We liked both equally but the ‘basic’ Posip was a fair bit cheaper. Wine on any kind of scale is quite something, not that these guys are massive producers Interesting, brief, tour and we saw some grapes being triaged, destemmed and pressed which was quite cool. Tonight we made it to Stina for the winery tour and tasting. A nice Grasevina from Krauthacker went very well with it. Very nice, if slightly expensive, fish platter but it was plenty enough to cover both of us for the whole meal. ![]() We are staying a few minutes from the Ranc restaurant so popped in last night.
